Rally WBA started keeping record of the Bald Eagle Ice-Out dates in 2022, for the purpose of declaring a winner of the ice-out contest. We were grateful to be provided historical record prior to 2022 that was compiled by local residents using various criteria.
How is Ice-Out date is declared for the contest?
It’s not a perfect science (let’s start with that). If you can/could drive a boat 50 feet off-shore around the perimeter of the lake without running into any ice, that is when the ice is declared out. In that scenario, the middle sections of the lake must be free of large ice masses. The lake does not need to be 100% free of ice bits and chunks (that would be too hard to determine). That’s it!
